Chicks or Pullets
which is best for my new flock?
Baby chicks are so cute and fuzzy. But be aware if you have never raised babies there is a lot of start up costs and expenses. Basically, a $3 or $5 chick can cost you up to $100 or more for basic supplies.
You can get "started or juvenile" chicks ages 8-16 weeks old. They can be put in outdoor coops or runs. The overall costs are less for older chicks or pullets, if you are just getting started with your chicken hobby.

Plymouth Barred Rock, Rhode Island Red, White Leghorn, Black Australorp, Americana (EE's) Red, Gold or Black "sex linked" hybrid chickens. These breeds are best known and extremely good egg layers. Other breeds will be in stock as well. These above breeds are the most common egg layers sought for purchase.
Ages: Started pullets are 12-16 weeks old and start laying eggs at age 26-28 weeks on average. So you should get eggs real soon. When choosing your breed of chickens basic commercial non fancy chickens are the most hardy of breeds. The general rule: The "fancier the breed" in feathering or colors... the less hardy the breed or less immunity to diseases.
Why immunize for Mareks?
All of our chicks are bred and hatched in Texas and already have been immunized on hatch date for Mareks disease- a 100% fatal disease for a large percentage of chickens that can be prevented. Read: MUST READ facts about Mareks
Many backyard breeders claim they sell immunized chicks, however the medications used for vaccinations are prepackaged refrigerated dosages for thousands of chickens. The two medication viles contains a live viruses and must be mixed properly and injected to baby chick by someone under sanitary conditions, And they must mix vaccines in dosages properly per "thousands" Again, most backyard breeders may not really vaccinate their chicks, unless they hatch and breed in the thousands. It would be too costly just to immunize a few chicks and discard the the leftover medications.

There is a huge demand for poultry as pets, backyard hobbies, & agriculture.
In fact, nearly ALL large online hatcheries and factories are SOLD OUT of juvenile chickens and there is a waiting list for baby chicks some breeds through spring/summer/fall 2016
Simply put, there are no other places like Blue Star Ranch. This poultry establishment is here to serve your needs in poultry care and education of the proper way to maintain a backyard flock. Blue Star Ranch has developed signature service of superior quality in the poultry industry. We are a "bio secure" location so we are closed to the general public. But you can call anytime and set appointment to see our chickens. You may walk right up to coops and select your chickens.

When buying chickens from anywhere look for tight full feathers under the tail area and bright red combs/wattles if she is laying eggs. If you see black spots on comb, missing feathers, dull eyes and drooping wings, that is a sick chicken.
Blue Star allows you to personally examine every chicken before you purchase her to be sure you are getting a quality hen.

All chickens feathers are powdered with DE to prevent mites. As well as fed high protein quality feeds. All chickens over 8 weeks old are "seasoned" meaning ready to stay in outdoor pens or coops. Your chickens are color leg  banded for proof. Be sure to read our healthy coop page.
